Chapter 28

The city stopped burning behind him. Adrean stepped through Lucifer's sealed door and the throne's call grew loud. It hummed under his ribs like a drum. He held the blood sword tight and walked toward the seat that had demanded him home. The chamber waited beyond the door. A thousand stone seats climbed under a ceiling of moving stars. His throne sat at the top of the stairs, glowing with the stolen power he had bound into it. But he was not alone. Chronos Luminar stood beside it, made of white light, his staff of clockwork gold in one hand. Shiva stood near the base of the stairs, arms crossed, the snake tight at his throat. "You woke it," Chronos said. "I felt it from across creation." This was the god-king who had once spared Adrean's life at the council. Now his eyes were hard. "Sit it if you can. Most who reach for a god's throne burn." Adrean climbed. Each step tore at him. The stolen divinity, the tree roots, the god-king's power he had learned to match all pulled in different directions. He reached the throne and set his hand on the arm. Pain shot up his wrist. The seat tested him, the way it had rejected him three times before. "Wait," Adrean said. He spoke to the throne itself, low and firm. His voice did not shake. He forced the power to hold still. The pull stopped. The throne obeyed. He sat. His system chimed. Words burned across his mind. Throne Claimed. Absorbing bound divinity. Class evolution ready. He read the last line twice. Sovereign of Unending Blood — evolution available. The forbidden path he had chased across the whole arc opened one door wider. Chronos went still. Then he laughed, soft and surprised. "You commanded it to wait. And it waited." He tapped his staff on the floor. "I am impressed. Truly. I have watched gods for ages. None ordered a throne to heel." But Adrean felt what the god-king felt. He locked eyes with Chronos and read the depth of him. Light poured off Chronos in layers, each one deeper than the last. He was far stronger than Adrean had guessed. A day of training had only touched his surface. Shiva climbed one step. "I told you my full strength was almost yours," he said. "It is yours now. But look at him. You are not ready for that." Adrean gripped the throne arms. The seat held him. The evolution waited behind one more door. He was crowned and stronger than ever. Yet Chronos stood there, calm, deeper than any well Adrean had drained. "The evolution needs more," Adrean said. "More power than I hold." Chronos smiled and turned to go. "Then take mine," he said. "If you can survive it." The throne was his. The path was open. And the strongest god left in creation had just named himself Adrean's last prey.
