Chapter 2

Morning light filled the bar. The storm had softened to a gray hush outside. Adrian woke stiff on a bench, a blanket over him he didn't remember taking. Maxim stood at the window, watching snow drip from the eaves. Adrian had slept beside a stranger who fed him and warmed him. Now the fear crept back. He liked Maxim. But one night meant nothing. He couldn't build a life on a storm. He sat up. "The snow's stopping," he said. "Road might clear by afternoon." Maxim turned. He didn't smile like before. "It might." He wiped his hands on a rag. "You in a hurry to go?" Adrian didn't answer. He needed to know if this was real before he let himself want it. So he decided to test it. "Can I ask you something honest?" Maxim nodded and set the rag down. "Last night was easy," Adrian said. "We were stuck. People get close when they're scared. I don't want to fool myself." His voice shook. "So tell me the truth. If the road opens, do you want me gone?" Maxim crossed the room. He pulled a chair and sat close, knees almost touching Adrian's. "You want honest," he said. "Fine." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I've lived out here two years. Plenty of people pass through. I let them pass. I don't rescue their trucks. I don't give them my blanket." He looked at the caged rabbits on the shelf, noses still pressed together. "I saved those two because I hate seeing something freeze alone. Last night I looked at you and felt the same pull." Adrian's throat tightened. "That's kindness. Not the same thing." "I know the difference," Maxim said. "I've wanted a partner my whole life. A home. Someday kids. I stopped expecting to find him out here." He held Adrian's eyes. "Then you walked in half frozen and I stopped wanting the storm to end. That's not kindness. That's me hoping." Adrian breathed out slow. The same hope lived in his own chest. He'd wanted a husband and a family since he was young. He'd almost stopped believing it too. "I want those things," he said quietly. "A house big enough for children. All of it." "Then don't rush off," Maxim said. "Stay a few days. Let's find out if this is real, storm or no storm." Adrian looked at Maxim's steady face. The doubt didn't vanish. But it moved aside. "Okay," he said. "I'll stay." Maxim smiled and stood. He crossed to a table near the counter and lifted a jar. Inside sat a cluster of pink roses, full and bright against the winter light. "Grew these in the back room," he said. "Kept them alive all winter." He set them beside Adrian. "First thing that's ever made me want to try." Adrian touched a petal. He'd come here to leave. Now he wasn't leaving. The spark was real, and he had days ahead to prove it.
