Chapter 5

The blue slug crossed the last stretch of rock and stopped at the foot of the platform. Its wet trail hardened behind it into a tall, banded crystal pillar, blue and green, glowing from within. Aethel stared. The messenger had not just arrived. It had marked the spot. The slug shrugged the folded cloth off its back. It was not cloth. It was a small carved model of a stone house with a steep, pointed roof. Aethel knelt and turned it in their hands. No words. No symbols they knew. Just a tiny building, heavy and cold. A house. An offer of shelter? A warning that the towers were watching their own walls? Aethel's chest tightened. One wrong guess and the cannon would speak next. Between them now hung a thin, cracked thing — like glass already splitting, fluid weeping through the lines. High above, a winged shape circled. Pale feathers, spiked tail. Another outcast, drawn by the half-built platform, waiting to see if it was safe to land. Aethel's hands shook. They could not afford to guess. They set the carved house down on the boards. Then, slowly, they placed their own small wooden model beside it — a flat platform on stilts. Their home next to theirs. Not an answer. A question returned. The slug studied both pieces. It lifted the carved house back onto its skin and turned. It crawled away toward the bunker, leaving Aethel's model behind. The truce had not broken. But the meaning was still locked, and the winged shape above was still circling, still waiting.
