Chapter 8

Nyx stood on the shrine steps, real now, no longer a dream. The shadow girl with ruby eyes watched Aisling and Zamir with a cracked smile. Then her smile broke. A high sound came from her throat, thin and cold. The stone beneath her cracked. Frost spread up the rail. Aisling felt the grief pour off the child like a winter wind. Below, the trees bent, and she thought of Willowbrook, the village she had already hurt with this same buried pain. "She's afraid," Aisling said. "Cleansing won't work. She isn't a ghost to banish. She's grief." She had learned that once, when she accepted Nyx into herself. But now the child stood outside her, whole and lashing. If she struck out, the whole mountain path down to the village lay open to her cold. Zamir reached for Nyx. She snapped at his hand, and ice bit his fingers. He pulled back. "I carry her," he said. "The piece of your soul. Perhaps I should give it up." "No." Aisling caught his wrist. "That erases you. And it won't soothe her. She isn't asking to be split apart. She's asking to be held." Aisling knelt on the cracked stone. She did not use a rite. She used her voice, the one that reached spirits still willing to listen. She sang low, the calling song, but softer now, meant for a frightened child. "I know why you're crying," she sang. "I left you alone in the snow. I'm sorry. I won't leave again." The child's ruby eyes shook. The frost slowed. Aisling opened her arms. Nyx did not move. So Aisling did what the ritual could never do. She reached into herself, not for the fragment Zamir held, but for the part that was only hers. Her own grief, kept locked for years. She opened it freely and let the child feel it matched her own. Nyx stepped into her arms. She was cold, then warm. The shadow softened against Aisling's chest. Light passed between them, a thread of it, joining Aisling, the child, and Zamir in one line. Zamir gasped. For a breath he turned thin, almost gone. Aisling caught his hand. "Zamir!" "You are whole now," he whispered. He smiled. The shrine groaned around them. "A soul cannot be taken. But a bond can be chosen." Aisling understood. She closed her eyes. She reached into herself again, into the part that belonged only to her, and she opened it to him. Not to take back her fragment. To give freely, so the bond was a choice, not a chain. The frost melted. The cracked stone stilled. Nyx faded, not banished, but at peace, folded back into Aisling whole and quiet. Zamir stood solid again, her hand in his. But he was pale, and his eyes had lost their sharp violet fire. "Something is wrong," he said slowly. "The bond is chosen now. I feel it pulling. The mountain is calling me back to what I was."
