Chapter 9

Zamir's hand went cold in hers. His edges blurred, like ink dropped in water. The shrine's carved doors rattled behind them. Aisling felt the mountain reaching for him, hungry to pull him down into stone and wind. The bond was a choice now, but the mountain did not care. It only knew he was free, and free meant lost. "No," Aisling said. "You're not going back to nothing." She had reached spirits before. She had held Nyx, the shadow child of her own grief, until the girl folded back into her soul, whole and quiet. She could hold him too. "A bond is a choice. So I choose again. I choose you." She did not use a rite. She used her voice, the one that reached spirits still listening. She sang, low and steady, the way she had sung to the frightened child on the cracked steps. But this song was not sorry. It was stubborn. "You are Zamir," she sang. "Deity of the mountain. Not the mountain itself. Stay in the shape you chose." Zamir shook his head, growing thinner. "You could let me go. It would be easier for you." "So could you," Aisling said. "You could have taken my soul years ago and kept it. You gave it back." She pressed his palm flat against her own. "Then I suppose we're both fools." He laughed, a rough sound, and his fingers grew solid against hers. "I have waited a very long time for someone to say that to me." Light rushed through the shrine. It poured from the carved doors, over the stone steps, down the long winding stairs that fell through the green trees below. The pull of the mountain broke. Zamir stood solid again. Still a god. Still bound to the peak by duty. But no longer bound by her stolen soul. A new mark glowed faint between their pressed palms, a thin ring of light. Not a chain. A promise, given both ways. Aisling let out the breath she had held. Below them, morning spilled over Willowbrook, the village she had climbed from so long ago. Roofs caught the first gold. Somewhere down there, Melora would be waking, well and whole. Aisling looked at the man she loved. "The mountain will always call you," she said. "I can't change that." "No," Zamir agreed. "But I am not alone now. That changes everything." He looked at the light between their hands. "You held a god to his own shape. Do you know what that makes you?" She did. A bridge that could not be broken. A shaman in more than name. But she was not ordained yet, and her people waited below. "It makes me late," she said. "Melora will want a full account." She turned toward the long stairs and the waking village. The bond glowed warm in her palm, hers to carry down the mountain and into whatever came next.
