Aitee Moonstone set her mixing bowl down outside the weathered timber inn. She had walked past the fancy gilded place that morning, where the doorman had laughed her off again. Today she would not beg. Today she would build a recipe so good the whole town would taste her win. She rolled up her sleeves behind the cheerful little stand she had wheeled into place. A bright awning snapped above the counter. She lit her burners and whispered a small spell into the batter. The crowd outside the fancy inn began to drift toward the smell. The innkeeper of the worn timber tavern stepped out, arms crossed. He watched her pour, flip, and stack. He did not laugh. He did not wave her off. He just watched. Aitee built her pancakes higher and higher. Golden edges curled. Warm syrup slid down each layer. When she set the towering plate on the counter, it gleamed under the awning lights. People leaned in. A child gasped. The innkeeper took one bite. He chewed slowly. Then he set the fork down and said, "Bring this inside. We serve it tonight." Coins clinked as travelers lined up at her booth. Across the way, the gilded inn's doors stayed shut, its crowd gone. Aitee crossed out a line in her ledger and wrote a new one above it. One inn had said yes. But word would travel fast, and not everyone who heard it would be pleased.
