Chapter 1

Aiyana Brightwater smoothed the stolen map flat on her grandmother's knee and saw that half of it was gone. Water had eaten the ink. Whole trails now bled into pale smears. She needed this map to walk to the center of the Thornwood, take back the stolen relic, and carry it home before the old woman died. Winter was close. The map was ruined. The collector kept the relic locked in his house at the wood's heart. His hired men had gone in to steal it and never walked out. The Thornwood shifts its paths at night. It bends time against anyone who does not belong. Aiyana belonged. She had been born under those trees. But a wrong turn could still drop her into water the map marked as solid ground, and the wood could hold her for days that felt like hours. Inside the teepee, firelight moved across the woven walls. Her grandmother sat wrapped in a warm hide, thin now, her breath slow. She had taught Aiyana the old words for a full year, one night at a time. She had also told her never to enter the wood alone. "The ink is dead," Aiyana said. She pointed at a gray blur where a marked pond should have been. "I can't trust any of it." Her grandmother touched the ruined corner with one finger. "Then don't trust it. Trust what you carry." Aiyana understood. The map was a dead man's guess. She did not need his lines. She needed the old words her grandmother had given her, the ones that ask the wood to remember she was there and that she mattered. Singing them cost her sleep. It had once cost her three days she still would not name. But the song had never lied to her the way this paper did. She fed the map to the fire. The paper curled and browned. The false pond, the smeared trails, the collector's careful marks all turned to ash. For a moment she felt the risk close over her like cold water. Now she had no chart at all. Only her voice and her memory. "You could wait," her grandmother said. "Take a guide." "There is no time to wait." Aiyana pulled her hood up. "And the last man who trusted a guide is somewhere under those trees." She stepped out of the teepee into the dark tree line. Behind her, the fire threw her shadow long across the painted walls. She opened her mouth and began the first low note of the old song. The wood ahead seemed to lean in and listen. She walked forward with nothing to steer by but the song and her own memory. The map was gone. From here, one wrong note could strand her as surely as one wrong turn once had.
