Chapter 1

Alani's hands shake as she opens her laptop at three in the morning. The grant application stares back at her from the screen — the one she almost missed, the one that could actually cover the lease, the equipment, everything. Twenty-four hours left to submit. The café she wants to build has lived in her head for so long it feels more real than her own kitchen. A place where artists could work without ordering something every hour just to keep their table. Where the walls would fill with local work that people might actually buy. But the space she found won't wait forever, and this grant might be her last real shot. She pulls up the photos of the building on her phone for the hundredth time. Black stone facade, ornate details that make it look like it belongs in another era. The warm glow from those arched windows had grabbed her the first time she saw it. Too grand, maybe, for what she could afford — but the owner had dropped the rent twice already. Someone else would snap it up soon. She closes the photos and clicks through the grant questions, her cramped fingers finding their rhythm again. By dawn, she hits submit. The building might still slip away, but at least now she has a real chance. But when she drives past the building that afternoon, her stomach drops. A massive sign stands out front, all copper and bronze lettering catching the light. Someone already claimed it. She parks and walks closer, ready to see another coffee shop name, another boutique. The sign reads "Wyldewuuds" in ornate script. She doesn't recognize the name. Her phone buzzes — the grant committee. They want to meet tomorrow. The space is gone, but the money might not be. She stands there in front of the empty building, watching light spill from those windows, and realizes she'll have to start looking all over again. She touches the silver locket at her throat, the one she bought herself after her first rejected grant. A reminder that she'd survived that disappointment and kept going. Inside the building, a light flickers off. The windows go dark one by one. She pulls out her phone and takes one last photo of the place that almost was. Then she opens her email and responds to the grant committee, confirming tomorrow's meeting. The building is lost, but the dream isn't. She gets back in her car and drives home to start searching for another space.
