Chapter 1

Albus Potter had copied every death record in Nivalspire, hunting one thing the dead could not tell him: how to never join them. He was a scribe by trade. He wrote love letters for half the town, folded them into his coat, and mailed hopes he never dared feel himself. But the letter he cared about most stayed unfinished. It begged an audience with the Warden of the Vaults, the one figure who guarded the city's oldest secrets on immortality. Six such letters had already returned unopened. The Warden did not meet strangers, and Albus knew no one who could introduce him. So he stopped writing and started trading. In the market he bought a relic from a one-eyed peddler: an old silver cylinder, banded with braided metal and etched in a script that predated the city. Albus recognized three of its symbols from the death records. They named a rite the Warden was said to protect. He held proof that he already knew part of the secret. Proof might open a door that words could not. The trouble was reaching the Warden at all. Guards ringed the vault gate day and night. A letter would be seized. A man would be turned away. Albus needed a messenger no guard would think to stop. He found her that evening near his window, drawn to his candle. A tiny winged creature no taller than his thumb hovered above the sill, her wings scattering pale light across his desk. She studied him without fear. Albus had fed her breadcrumbs for a month, never asking why she stayed. Now he asked. "I need this carried past the gate," he whispered. He tied a folded plea to the silver relic with thread, then thought better of the weight. Instead he pressed a single object into her small hands: a phoenix feather he had guarded for years, its shaft still warm, its edges bright as a low fire. It was the rarest thing he owned. The Warden collected such wonders. "Give her this. Tell her the scribe knows the three signs. Tell her I want only to talk." The sprite closed her fingers around the feather. She rose, circled once, and slipped out into the dark toward the vault. Albus waited through the night. He did not sleep. At dawn a knock struck his door. No sprite stood there. A servant in gray livery held a wax-sealed card and would not meet his eyes. The card named a time that same day. Below it, one line: *Bring the relic. Come alone.* Albus read it twice. His hands shook. He had his audience at last. But the card said nothing of the sprite, and she had not come home. The feather was gone. The relic was expected. And the Warden now knew exactly what he carried and exactly how little he understood.
