Chapter 2

The door held the storm out, but the cold stayed inside. Aldric breathed and saw his own breath. The stone walls sweated frost. Mira crouched against the far wall, clutching her clay tablet, her lips already going gray. He touched the floor. Ice, not warmth. The building had no fire, no wood, no hearth he could find. Night was falling, and without heat they would both freeze before morning. Aldric searched every corner. He found empty lanterns, cold ash, a chair too damp to burn. "We need fire," he said. "Anything that burns. I'll find it." "You'll die out there," Mira said. Her teeth clicked. "Then I'll owe a dead man." "Then wait for me here." He pulled the door open and ran into the wind. Across the way, a stone hall glowed under weathered banners. Traders still worked their stalls, ignoring the ice. Aldric ducked between them, shivering. At the last stall sat an old man wrapped in a bleached cloak. His hands were webbed with burn scars. He was carving marks into a scrap of bone. "Fire," Aldric said. "I need to buy fire. My friend is freezing." The old man looked up with red-rimmed eyes. "Everything here has a price, stranger." He grinned, showing gaps. "Hadrian Bole. I sell secrets the gods want back. You don't look rich." "I have no coin," Aldric said. "Only a promise. I'm building a haven for lost travelers. Help me tonight, and you'll always have a door." Hadrian laughed, then coughed. "A haven." He studied Aldric's glowing eyes. Something in them made him stop laughing. "That building with the eyes. You went inside." He leaned close. "There's a stone in its back wall. Carved with old marks. Press it. The eyes give heat to anyone who asks right. I stole that secret years ago. Never had reason to use it." "Why give it to me?" "Because you're fool enough to mean what you say." Hadrian pressed a bone scrap into Aldric's hand. Carved on it were the marks. "Say these words at the stone. Now go, before you're a corpse." Aldric ran back through the ice. His hands shook as he shoved the door open. Mira lay curled and still. He hauled her upright. "Stay with me." He found the back wall, the carved stone waiting under his palm. He read the marks aloud, stumbling over each strange sound. The carved eyes above brightened. Warmth poured from the walls, slow then strong. The frost melted from the floor. Mira gasped and color returned to her face. She stared at the glowing stone, then at Aldric. "You bought us a night," she said. "I bought us more." Aldric held up the bone scrap. "The eyes obey a price. Warmth for words. If they can do this, they can do other things. This building isn't just shelter. It's a tool." But the marks glowed brighter than he'd spoken for. Somewhere, something had heard him ask.
