Chapter 1

Aldric Fenrir had chased the same scent for ten years, and it had never once led him to a face. He stood at the gate of Stone Wolf Keep at dawn, a pack on his back, ready to walk out and find the woman fate had bound to him. But he could not point in any direction. He knew her smell the way he knew his own heartbeat. Wild honey. Crushed pine. Rain on warm stone. That was all. No name. No face. Just a scent that had haunted his sleep since his first shift as a boy. His mother watched from the steps. "You cannot walk the whole world sniffing the wind," she said. Aldric didn't answer. He knew she was right, and that was the problem. He closed his eyes and let the wolf rise under his skin. Fur. Muscle. Bone bending. Between one breath and the next he dropped to four legs. The world flooded with smell. Woodsmoke from the kitchens. Horses. The cold iron of the gate. He tested the wind from the north, then the east. Nothing. He turned south, toward the deep woods below the keep, and lifted his nose. There. Faint. Almost gone. Wild honey. He ran. He did not stop to say goodbye. He tore down the slope and into the trees, the thread pulling him forward. Twice it faded and he circled, panic clawing his chest, until he caught it again. The scent grew stronger the deeper he went. His paws ate the miles. By afternoon the trees thinned, and he broke into a small clearing. A cottage sat there. Cheerful and small, with flower boxes at every window and a red door. Blooms spilled from pots along the porch. The scent poured off the place like heat from a hearth. Wild honey. Crushed pine. Her. Aldric shifted back to a man, breathing hard. His hands shook. After ten years, she was behind that door. But the cottage was silent. No smoke rose from the stone chimney. The flowers in the boxes had begun to brown at the edges, unwatered. He climbed the steps and knocked. Nothing. He pushed the red door open. Inside, dust hung in the light. A kettle sat cold on the stove. A chair was pulled out, as if someone had risen and never returned. The scent was everywhere and days old. Two people had lived here. One smell was fresh grief, salt and sickness, and it ended in the back room. The other was hers, sweet and alive, but faint. She had been here. She had left. On the table lay a folded shawl and a single dried flower. Aldric picked up the shawl and breathed her in. His mate was real. She had a home. And she had walked away from it, alone and grieving, into a forest with no roads. He had found her door too late. Now he had to find where she had gone.
