Chapter 1

Alex Anomaly knelt in the snow and counted the heat left inside them. Not much. Their orange skin had gone dull as old brick, and the fire that had always lived under their ribs now flickered like a candle in a draft. Frostshade wanted them dead. It had wanted every demon dead since the old magic locked its heart in ice and shoved their kind to the ragged edges of the world. Alex had come to break that lock. They meant to walk to the frozen heart and light an eternal flame there, and thaw the world back open for the scraping, starving kin they had left behind. But the cold was faster than they had planned. Another day like this one and there would be no fire left to carry. They brushed the snow flat with the side of one hand. The ground beneath was black rock, veined with old frost. Alex pressed a thumb against their sternum and drew. A thin bead of ember light came up through the skin. They used it like chalk. They scratched a ring first, then a second ring inside it, then a five-pointed star locked between the two. Around the outer band they wrote the small sigils their mother had made them memorize before the cold took her voice. Their hand shook. They kept writing. When the last mark closed, Alex sat cross-legged in the center and put both palms on the star. "Take what's mine," they said, "and give it back bigger." The lines caught. Gold light ran the grooves like water finding a channel. Ember-red bloomed along the outer ring and lifted. A wall of fire rose around Alex in a clean circle, waist high, then shoulder high. Heat pushed against their face for the first time in weeks. Snow retreated from the ring in a widening scorch. Steam climbed off their shoulders. Their skin brightened back to the orange they remembered, the orange from before the walk. Alex breathed in and felt the fire answer inside their chest, no longer a candle. A forge. They laughed once, rough, and the sound surprised them. Then the ring did what circles like this always do. It asked for a price. The gold veins pulled, and Alex felt a thread of themselves go into the ground with the heat. Something under the rock drank. Far off, past the white plain, a low sound rolled toward them like a bell struck underwater. The frozen heart had noticed. Alex stood inside the burning ring. The cold could no longer kill them today. But whatever kept the heart sealed now knew a demon was coming, and knew exactly where to look. They stepped out of the circle, and walked toward the sound.
