Chapter 1

Amara Wilson signed the waiver at the folding table because her sister's inhaler cost more than rent. The lab tech slid the pen across without looking up. Six weeks of injections, one classified trial, forty thousand dollars if she survived it. Meridian had four registered superheroes and a rising body count, and every week another building on her block came down. Amara wanted the money. She also wanted what the flyer had promised in smaller print: a chance at the serum. If it worked, she could stop worrying about a school bus that passed three collapsed intersections. She could stand between Nia and whatever came next. She rolled up her sleeve. The tech tapped a vein and told her to breathe. Six weeks later a woman in a gray coat called her into an office and said the trial had failed. No measurable change. They cut her a check, thanked her, and walked her to the door. Amara rode the train home and cried once in the bathroom, quietly, so Nia wouldn't hear through the wall. Three nights after that she woke because the room was too bright. Two small foxes stood on her comforter. Their fur moved like smoke lit from inside, and pale symbols drifted along their ribs. One tilted its head. The other stepped onto her wrist and weighed nothing. Amara lifted her hand and the lamp on the dresser rose with it. She set her hand down. The lamp settled. In the next room, Nia coughed once and turned over. Amara looked at the foxes and understood the trial had not failed. It had only been slow. She whispered that she was ready, and meant it.
