Chapter 7

Dawn broke gray over the castle wall. Amarielle's butterfly still guarded the tree, but she felt the change on the wind. Hooves and wingbeats, far off, growing near. Vespra had done it. The elders rode the road, hours ahead of any deadline. The bloom cycle was not finished. Amarielle hovered over the sapling and counted the petals that still glowed. She had no spell to slow the road, no way to buy the hours the tree needed. The prince woke and came out barefoot in the cold grass. He looked at the tree, then at her. "They're coming," he said. Not a question. He had heard the sound too. "Too early," Amarielle said. "The rite isn't done. I can't stop them." He knelt by the trunk and set his hand near the glowing bark. "Then we wait and we fail," he said. He did not soften it. A small shape cut across the garden. Pink wings, silver-streaked hair. Sage Silverwhisper landed on the wall, breathing hard. She was Amarielle's oldest friend, the pixie who ran the market stall and had warned her against this whole mad love from the start. She carried a pouch tight to her chest. "I flew past the gate," Sage said. "They're on the lower road. Close." She did not scold. She opened the pouch. Inside lay her stardust, the best she owned, saved for market charms. "Sage, that's everything you have," Amarielle said. "Then don't waste it standing here." Sage lifted off the wall and dove toward the road. Amarielle followed. Below, the gate opened onto a long stone path. The elders' lights showed through the trees, cold and gold. Sage flew low over the road and tore her pouch open. She scattered stardust across the stones in wide sweeps. The dust caught the dawn and blazed. The whole road lit up, every stone glowing the same bright pink. The path split and doubled in the shine. One road became ten, all glittering, all false. The elders' lights slowed. Their voices rose, confused. The glow swallowed the true path. They could not tell stone from stardust. They circled, searching, and the gate stayed empty. "That won't hold forever," Sage said. She hovered over the blinding road, her pouch empty in her hand. "But it holds. Go back to the tree. Let it finish." Amarielle flew back to the garden. The prince stood over the sapling. She watched the petals. One opened wide. Then another. The pink light climbed the branches, brighter, stronger, filling out the crown. The bloom cycle was closing. The stardust had bought the hours. The last petal spread. The tree flared white-pink, then settled into a steady glow. The rite was complete. Amarielle turned to thank Sage. The pixie was already gone, back over the wall, her empty pouch folded away. She said nothing about what she had given. That was her way.
