Chapter 1

Ambrose Mourningvale kept a ledger of every ghost in his house, and tonight he faced one he could not name. For thirty years he had catalogued the dead things that shared Mourningvale Manor. He measured their cold spots. He sketched their shapes. But this presence left no shape to sketch. It only walked behind him. He first noticed it on the stairs. A second set of footsteps stopped when his stopped. He turned. The hall stood empty. He turned back, and the following resumed. He could not study a thing he could not see, and that gap in his knowledge gnawed at him worse than any fear. "You are certain it isn't the draft again," Dahlia said. She did not look up from her book. His wife met most horrors with the same flat calm she gave a late dinner. "The draft does not keep pace with a man," Ambrose said. "It matches my stride. It waits when I wait." Dahlia turned a page. Then the pendulum on the wall clock swung sideways. Not down, not with gravity. It leaned toward the far corner and held there, straining against its own rod. Dahlia closed her book. "That," she said, "is new." Ambrose lifted the pendulum from its hook. Freed, the polished bob still pulled toward the corner, dragging his hand. "It points," he whispered. "It points at what I cannot see." They followed it. The bob swung ahead of them, steady as a hound on a scent. It led them down the corridor, past the tall windows, into the drawing room. Each time they neared the spot it indicated, the pendulum lurched and swung to a new heading. The presence moved. It always stayed one room ahead. "It's fleeing us," Dahlia said. "No." Ambrose stopped. He watched the bob settle. It did not point at the room. It pointed back at his own chest. He stepped left. The bob followed him. He stepped right. It followed again, always aimed at him. He walked to the center of the room and stood still. Dahlia crossed to the corner where the thing had seemed to wait. She held out her hand. "Nothing here," she said. "Cold, but empty." Ambrose raised the pendulum between them. The bob strained toward him and only him. The truth arrived plain and certain. The thing had never haunted the manor. It had no fixed corner, no cold room, no grave to guard. "It isn't following the house," he said. "It's following me. Wherever I go, it comes. That is why we never catch it near the walls." Dahlia lowered her hand and studied him. "Then you can't leave it behind." "No." Ambrose set the pendulum on the table, where it kept pointing at his heart. He felt the old thrill rise, sharp and awful. "But if it wants me, it must come close. And a thing that comes close can be observed."
