Chapter 1

Amelia stood in the empty shop with a paint roller in one hand and a problem she could not paint over. The lease was signed. The windows were washed. The sign above the door promised rare fae blossoms to every traveler who passed through Serinthia. She had none. She had three buckets of common daisies from the market and a jar of river lilies already going soft at the stems. Her transparent green wings twitched behind her sundress. She sat down on an overturned crate and counted her coins on the floorboards. Enough for one more week of rent. Not enough for a second shipment of anything ordinary, and ordinary would not save her. Every florist on the lane sold daisies. She had come to this city to sell wonders. The door creaked. Shouta stepped in without knocking, hood up, dark wings folded tight against his back. He had been her neighbor for two weeks and had already fixed her leaking sink twice without being asked. He looked at the daisies. He looked at her face. He sighed like a man who already knew he was going to help. "You're going to cry on the flowers," he said. "They'll wilt faster." "I don't know where to find anything rare," Amelia said. Her voice went small. "I asked at the market. I asked the old gardeners. No one knows a bloom nearby that isn't already in every shop window." Shouta pushed his hands deeper into his hoodie pockets. His tired gold eyes moved to the back wall, then away, like he was arguing with himself. Finally he pulled one hand out and dropped something on the crate beside her. A single golden petal, dry but still warm to the touch. "Where did you get this?" she whispered. "Behind the old ruins past the river," he said. "There's a stone arch out there. Cracked. Moss all over it. Locals won't go near it." He shrugged. "Flowers grow through the base. I've never seen them anywhere else." Amelia closed her hand around the petal. It glowed faint through her fingers. "Take me," she said. He rubbed the back of his neck. "Now?" "Now." They walked out past the last houses while the sun dropped low. The arch stood in a clearing exactly where he said, stone ring split with gold lines, moss softening every crack. At its base grew a single flower with petals like poured light. Amelia knelt and cut the stem with shaking hands. One bloom. Real. Hers. Then the arch hummed. The air inside the ring rippled like water. A small green otter stepped through it, gold swirls curling along its fur, gold eyes fixed on her. It sat on the cracked stone and blinked once, patient, as if it had been sent to fetch her. Shouta swore quietly. "Amelia," he said, "that arch isn't a ruin. It's a door. And something on the other side just noticed you."
