Amelie CloudRunner was sorting linens when the front door burst open. Armed men spilled into the hall, and behind them came Dr. Owl in his red coat, a glowing crimson moon pinned to his lapel. He clapped his hands twice. "Round them up," he barked. "The Red Hounds need fresh recruits." Amelie's hand closed around the dark, ritual-worn horseshoe in her apron pocket. She had spent her life cataloguing threats so the children would not have to. Now her oldest ward, the cursed girl, stood frozen by the stairs. "Through the garden gate," Amelie said. Her voice was low and steady. "Now. All of you. Run." The children bolted. The cursed girl took the smallest ones by the hand. They poured through the carved gate at the back of the yard, and to their eyes it opened on a bright fairy garden. They slammed it shut behind them. Two of the armed men crashed through after, but the gate's charm twisted on them. They stumbled into a dark, smelly back alley instead, blinking, lost. And Amelie was already waiting there. She had pressed her thumb to the horseshoe and spoken the old bargain. Shadows poured up her shoulders like spilled ink. Where her head had been, a black unicorn's skull now rose, horn curving high. Lightning cracked from the tip and lashed across the alley. The men dropped, twitching, smoke rising off their jackets. Orobas breathed once, slow. But through the open front door, Dr. Owl was already gone. His red coat flashed once at the end of the street and vanished. Amelie felt the demon's price settle into her like cold water: a name she had known yesterday, gone. She did not yet know which one. She only knew the Red Hounds had seen her face now, and they would come back with more.
