Amethyst cleared the last of the ash from the circle as boots crunched through frost behind her. She didn't turn. The guards had found her ritual ground in the winter forest, just as she'd known they would. This was the moment that mattered—not whether they discovered her magic, but what they saw when they did. She gestured once, and the clearing transformed. The old stone well at the circle's center erupted with woven light and shadow—not fighting each other, but braided together like rope. The pattern spread upward and outward, forming a shelter that glowed with soft warmth against the winter cold. Black flowers bloomed along the base, their petals catching points of light like stars. The guards stopped walking. One touched the barrier, then pulled back his hand, eyes wide. It had healed the frostbite on his fingers. Amethyst turned to face them and pointed at the cauldron beside the well. Inside, the liquid shimmered with that same balance of light and dark. She'd used this exact mixture three weeks ago when fever swept through the lower city. The guards would know—their captain's daughter had lived because of it. She lifted the cauldron and held it out. No apology. No explanation. Just proof. The lead guard looked from the shelter to the cauldron to Amethyst's face. He removed his helmet and set it on the ground between them. An old gesture, one the city used when acknowledging protection given. Behind him, the other guards did the same. The ritual ground stayed visible, no longer hidden. Amethyst had shown them what twilight magic was for, and they had answered with trust instead of steel.
