Chapter 2

Anita learned fast that opening the doors wasn't enough. She had to show people they could trust this place. The first morning, she stood behind the counter and waited. One factory worker came in, ordered coffee, and left quickly. Then a mother with two kids appeared at the window, looking uncertain. Anita smiled and waved them inside. She poured milk for the children without asking for payment. The mother's shoulders relaxed. By noon, three more families had come through. Word spread differently here—not through ads or signs, but through whispered recommendations at factory gates. Anita made sure every person who walked in felt the difference between her diner and everywhere else in New Xaxsuroth. But trust only went so far when people didn't know if it was safe to approach. Anita watched from the window as a young father hurried past with his daughter, glancing at the diner but not stopping. He probably wanted to come in but couldn't tell if today was a good day. She needed a way to signal when the refuge was open and ready. That afternoon, she built a wooden sign and mounted it on a sturdy post outside. The message was simple and clear. When families saw it, they would know they could come. Anita carried the sign out and set it up where people walking by would notice. A woman across the street stopped and read it. She nodded, then walked toward the door. The sign was working already.
