Chapter 14

The blockade was broken, but the crippled Crown ship sat inside Anne's reef like a splinter. Its crew watched from the deck. They counted her hulls. They marked her captains. By dawn Anne knew the truth: the reef was no longer a refuge. The Crown had seen inside it. She could not hold a base the enemy could map from her own harbor. Anne called Grimjack and Emily to her deck. The old navigator came without his compass, as he always did now. He looked at the beached Crown ship, then at Anne. "They've seen your count," he said. "Word gets out, whole navy comes. Reef's spent." He did not soften it. "Need new water." "Then give me new water," Anne said. Grimjack was quiet a long moment. "The Shattered Shelf. Compass needles spin loose there. No fleet crosses it." He tapped his chest. "But I've crossed it twice. I can chart a passage. The Crown can't follow where they can't hold a heading." Emily crossed her arms. "A passage isn't a base. We can't moor a fleet in open water." "There's a cut past the Shelf," Grimjack said. "Deep enough for your hulls. Narrow enough to guard. One mouth." Anne looked at the beached ship, then at the reef mouth where six Crown masts had sat that morning. Staying meant slow death. Running the Shelf meant trusting one old man's memory over every compass afloat. "Can we take the whole fleet through?" Anne asked. "If they sail my line and hold it," Grimjack said. "Drift off the line, the sea takes them." Emily frowned. "My hull can lead. She's built to take the strain. The others follow in my wake, ship to ship." She said it plainly. "The Crown calls it uncrossable. I call it unguarded." Anne made the call. "We burn the beached ship. No survivors to carry our count." She turned to Grimjack. "Then you take us through the Shelf." By noon the beached Crown ship burned to the waterline. Anne's crews watched the smoke and knew there was no going back to the reef. Anne set her fleet in a single line. Emily's weathered two-master took the lead, sails full, her scarred hull built to bear the crossing. Grimjack stood at Anne's shoulder and called each turn from memory. The needles on every deck spun useless. The captains held the line because Anne told them to, and because the alternative was the Crown at their backs. For two days they threaded the Shelf, ship following ship, no one drifting off the line. On the third dawn the water opened into a narrow cut, deep and quiet, with one guarded mouth. Anne's fleet slid inside. She had a base no Crown chart could reach. But the men who burned had not all burned in silence. One boat had slipped the reef before the fire. The Crown would soon learn Anne Dray had vanished past the Shelf, and they would look for the one man alive who could follow her there.
