Chapter 23

Grimjack lived, and he taught Emily the last marks in the days that followed. Anne sat in the cabin and watched them bend over his charts. He named the water and Emily repeated it back. Two minds held the route now. But naming marks in a warm cabin was not the same as steering a fleet through the Shelf, where compasses spun and the water lied. Anne had never seen Emily lead a full crossing under pressure. She did not know if the girl could do it when it counted. She meant to find out before the Crown forced the test on her. Emily heard the plan and set down her cup. "You want a real crossing," she said. "Not the edge. The whole passage." "The whole passage," Anne said. "Lead ship. Three vessels behind you. If you can bring them out the far side, I stop worrying." "You'll worry anyway." Emily rolled the chart and tucked it away. "But fine. A drill isn't a fight. I'd rather learn the difference now than in front of a Crown fleet." They took the two-masted raider as lead, a hard-used ship with billowing sails and a scarred hull. Claire went up the mast without being asked. She was the sharpest eye in the fleet, the lookout who caught trouble before it reached the deck. Anne trusted her over any instrument. They ran into the Shelf at dawn. The compass by the wheel began to swing. Emily did not look at it. She watched the water break over the hidden shoals and called her turns from that alone. "Reef to port," Claire called down. "Close." "I see it in the chop," Emily said. She held her line. The raider slid past the shoal with a hand's width to spare. The three ships behind her followed her wake exactly. Halfway through, the wind shifted and fog rolled across the passage. Anne felt her chest tighten. This was the moment that killed fleets. She said nothing. She let Emily lead. "Slow the following ships," Emily said, flat and certain. "I lose the far marks, we all wait for the fog to lift. Nobody guesses in here." They did not guess. Emily read the water by ear and eye, calling each turn as the fog thinned. By afternoon the raider came out the far side into open sea. One by one the three ships came out behind her, whole, none lost. Anne let out the breath she had held for hours. "You brought them through." "I brought them through," Emily said. "Grimjack could die tomorrow. You'd still have your route." That was the answer Anne had needed. The Shelf was no longer one old man's secret, nor one untested guess. Two keepers could lead a full crossing now, proven under fog and pressure. But proving it meant the fleet no longer had a reason to sit still. With the route secured in two minds, the pressure to raid Crown prizes and pay her captains their promised shares fell on Anne alone.
