Chapter 12

Annie slept badly. Her burned arm throbbed under the fresh cloth. When gray light crept through the window, she rose and dressed in the leather training armor and tied her hair up into two buns. Outside, she found Kaelen tightening a strap on the white stag's saddle. Frost clung to its iridescent coat. The fox pressed against her leg and watched him work. "We ride today," Kaelen said. He did not look up. "My father won't teach you harder magic yet. He says you don't understand the fox." He patted the stag's flank. "So he sends you to the archive. The answers are older than any of us." Annie frowned. "I thought I proved myself last night." "You learned to feel the burn. That's control." He finally met her eyes. "But you still can't say what the fox is, or why it chose you. My father won't put more power in your hands until you can." The ride was long and cold. The elven archive rose from the trees like a green cathedral. Tall windows glowed from within. Vines wrapped its stone stairs. Inside, luminous shelves climbed higher than Annie could see. The air smelled of old paper and candle smoke. Kaelen led her to a low table. He pulled scrolls and heavy books from the shelves. "Firefoxes," he said, dropping them down. "Read. I'll help you find the words. They're written in old Elvish." They worked for hours. The fox curled on the table between them, tail flickering. Kaelen traced faded lines and read them aloud. Annie listened and pieced it together. "Firefoxes are hearth-spirits," she said slowly. "They carry a spark of living fire. They bond with one soul, once, forever." She looked at the fox. "It doesn't just lend me warmth. It gives me its own fire to use." Kaelen turned another page. His finger stopped. He read, then read again, quieter. "What?" Annie asked. "The bond runs both ways." He looked at the fox, then at her. "When you pull its fire, you spend its life. Draw too hard, too often, and the fox burns out. Not you. It." Annie's stomach dropped. She thought of the panther, of the flood of power that had scorched her arm. She had thought only of her own skin. Every thread she yanked had cost the small creature beside her. "That's why my father wanted you here," Kaelen said. "He won't teach you to pull more until you understand what more costs." Annie pressed her palm to the fox's warm flank. It leaned into her hand and made a soft sound. She understood now. The magic was never only hers to spend. "I understand," she said. "I have to learn to fight without draining it dry." Kaelen closed the book. "Then you're ready for the next lesson. But now you carry a harder question. How do you grow strong enough to survive, without killing the one thing keeping you alive?" Annie looked at the fox and had no answer yet.
