Chapter 1

Apollo had written ten thousand songs, and not one could win back the man he loved. He sat alone in the empty amphitheater, his golden lyre across his knee. Its polished shell caught the last light. He plucked a chord so perfect it should have made stone weep. It didn't. He knew why. Every note he wrote now was flawless and cold. And flawless would never move Aether, the storm-god he had lost once already and swore to bind to his soul forever. He played the new song anyway. The melody climbed clean and bright through the marble columns. He had built it for weeks. He shaped every note to be the greatest song ever made. When he finished, he waited for his own heart to break. Nothing moved in him. That was the flaw. He could not make others feel what he had stopped letting himself feel. A slow clap broke the silence. Aether walked down the marble steps, hands still gloved in gold, the amulet swinging at his chest. Apollo's throat tightened. He had summoned Aether here to hear the song. Now he wished he hadn't. "Technically perfect," Aether said. He stopped three rows up. "I felt nothing." "I labored over every measure," Apollo said. "That's the problem." Aether did not sit. "You're a craftsman now. You used to be something worse. Something real." He turned to leave. "When you write me a song that costs you, I'll listen." Apollo watched him climb the steps. The rejection landed exactly where the Muses had warned it would. His craft had no blood in it. He set the lyre down and pressed his palms to his eyes. Then he remembered every heartbreak he had buried. The lovers who left. The centuries of chasing beauty and holding nothing. He had turned that pain into perfect technique so it would stop hurting. That was the trade that ruined him. "Wait," Apollo called. Aether paused near the top. Apollo lifted the lyre again. He did not plan the chords. He played the first ugly true thing he felt: the fear that he was too broken to be loved. His voice cracked on the opening line. He let it crack. He sang about losing Aether, about the shame of not deserving him, about wanting him anyway. The song was rough. It stumbled. It was the worst-made thing he had performed in a thousand years. Aether came back down the steps. He sat in the front row and said nothing. When the last raw note died, his gloved hand was pressed flat against his own chest. "That," Aether said quietly. "Finish that one." Apollo lowered the lyre, shaking. He had found the door at last. But the song was only half-written, and finishing it meant opening every wound he had spent centuries sealing. He looked at the man he could finally reach. To keep him, Apollo would have to bleed the whole song out.
