Chapter 8

Aqua returned to the castle with nothing left to give away. The shop was Lena's to open now. Alden was hers to stay with. But she moved through the halls like a guest who had wandered in by mistake. She did not know how to bow to a visiting lord. She did not know which fork to lift or when to stand. A castle had rules, and no one had taught her a single one. The king's maids found her lost outside the dining hall. The eldest, a gray-haired woman with quick hands, did not scold her. "You'll learn," she said. "We'll teach you." For weeks the maids drilled Aqua each morning. They showed her how to greet a guest, how to hold a cup, how to walk into a room without shrinking. Aqua practiced her bows until her legs ached. Her scales caught the candlelight, and she stopped hiding them. By the end of the season, she could pour wine without a spill. She could welcome a stranger to Alden's table and mean it. The castle no longer felt like a place she had snuck into. It felt like somewhere she belonged. Then the guards announced a visitor at the gate. Seph. Aqua ran through the tall doors before she remembered every lesson. Her brother stood in the courtyard under the blue banners, dust on his boots, the scales on his forearm dark and still. Still meant safe. For weeks those scales had lit up whenever danger came near her. Now they lay quiet. "It's done," Seph said. "The man who watched you. I found him. He won't reach you." He looked her over. "You're different." "I learned things," Aqua said. She dipped into a clean, easy bow, the one the maids had beaten into her. "Welcome to the castle." Seph's mouth twitched. It was almost a smile. "You stand like you own the floor now." Alden came down the steps behind her. Seph's eyes narrowed out of habit. His scales stayed dark. He watched the king cross the courtyard and stop at a careful distance, not reaching, not claiming. "You didn't take her," Seph said. "You waited for her to choose." "I did," Alden said. Seph studied him a long moment. Then he let out a slow breath. "Kings keep what they want. I said that to her." He nodded once. "I was wrong about you. Mostly." Aqua's chest loosened. Her brother had hunted the threat and killed it. He had come back and looked at the man she loved and not found an enemy. "I want to know you," Seph told Alden. "Not the crown. You." He crossed his arms. "I'm staying a while." The threat was gone. Her brother approved. But Seph would be watching every hour now, learning the king up close, and Aqua knew he would not stay quiet if Alden gave him one reason to doubt again.
