Chapter 2

Ares came back to the arena after three days of watching. His vulture had marked every pattern. Aether stepped left before every bolt. His left hand curled shut a breath before lightning came. He aimed at noise and motion. He never struck the same spot twice in a row. Ares knew all of it now. He walked down the marble steps with his bronze spear low and his falcon shield loose on his arm. The stands were full. Zeus watched from the high seat, white hair bright, saying nothing. Aether stood in the center of the sand, gold gauntlets glowing. "You finally came down," he said. He did not wait for an answer. "Good. I don't like waiting." The first bolt came fast. Old Ares would have charged straight in and burned for it. Instead he had already stepped right, before the strike, because Aether's shoulder told him where it would go. The lightning fused sand to glass where Ares had stood a heartbeat earlier. Ares kept moving. He circled, low, silent, giving Aether nothing to aim at. Aether frowned and threw a second bolt, then a third. Ares was not there for either. He read the curl of that left hand and slid clear each time. The crowd went quiet. A storm began to gather over the gauntlets, but storms take time, and Ares refused to give it. He closed the gap. The spear butt cracked across Aether's wrist and killed the rising bolt. Aether staggered, shocked. No one had touched him before. No weapon had reached him. He raised both hands to call the sky and Ares slammed the shield into his chest. The falcon emblem drove him flat into the sand. "You need the sky," Ares said. "You've never fought without it." Aether scrambled up and swung wild, no plan, only pride. Ares had waited his whole life to burn like that in a fight. Now he stayed cold. He hooked the boy's ankle with the spear shaft and dropped him again. Then again. Each time Aether reached for a storm, Ares was already inside his reach, breaking the motion before it finished. The great sky-wielder never landed one strike. Aether knelt in the sand, gasping, gold gauntlets dark and useless. The whole pantheon had watched him fall. He looked up at Ares with something new in his face. Not scorn. He had no answer for a fighter who thought. Ares pressed the spear tip to Aether's throat and held it there. He did not push. He wanted Aether alive to remember this. "Yield," Ares said. "I yield," Aether said. The words came hard. He had never said them to anyone. Ares pulled the spear back and stood over him. He had won by patience, not rage, and it felt stranger than any victory. Above them, Zeus rose from his seat. His son had just been beaten in front of every god on Olympus, and the king's face was not proud. It was afraid.
