Chapter 1

Aria Blackwing had no mother, no father, and no siblings, but she had a hundred birds who knew her voice. She fed them each morning from the porch of her log cabin, a place she had built with the plan of one day taking in every wounded songbird in the valley. She wanted a real shelter. Cages ready. Bandages stocked. A warm room where broken wings could mend. For now she had only herself, a kettle, and a shoulder that sparrows liked to sit on. The storm came in fast that afternoon. Wind bent the pines. Rain hit the timber walls in sheets. Aria latched the shutters and knelt by the stone hearth, coaxing the fire higher. A small black bird huddled against her collarbone, feathers trembling. She stroked its head with one finger and whispered that the worst would pass. Then she heard it. A thin, ragged cry, cutting under the wind. Not a sparrow. Not a finch. Something smaller and more frightened. She sat still and listened again. The cry came from outside, close to the porch. She pulled a shawl over her hair and pushed the door open. Rain slapped her face. She stepped down into the mud and followed the sound to the base of the steps. There, tucked between two loose stones, sat a young owl. One wing hung wrong. Golden eyes stared up at her, wide and unblinking. Water flattened its downy feathers to its body. Aria knelt in the mud. She cupped her hands around the small body without lifting it yet. The owl did not fight her. That scared her more than a bite would have. She slid her palms beneath its feet and carried it inside, holding the broken wing flat against her thumb. She set the owl on a folded cloth by the fire. The black bird on her shoulder hopped down and watched from the mantel. Aria fetched her sewing scissors, a strip of clean linen, and a thin wooden splint she had shaped for a pigeon last spring. She worked slowly. She spoke the whole time, low and even, the way she spoke to any frightened thing. The owl let her straighten the wing. It let her bind the splint. It closed its eyes when she was done. She exhaled. The wing was set. The bird was warm. The storm still hammered the roof, but inside, one small life had steadied. Then she looked at her shelves. One jar of salve. Two clean cloths. A single splint, now used. She had told herself for years that she would be ready when the wounded came. Tonight one had come, and she had almost nothing left for the next. Aria looked down at the owl breathing against the firelight. She would need more. Much more. And she would need it before the next cry reached her door.
