Chapter 1

Aria wanted to feel something and could not tell if she ever had. She stood inside her mirrored home, replaying the same eleven seconds again. A hand on her arm. Warmth. She had run this memory hundreds of times, and it never returned. The problem was worse than losing the feeling. She had no way to name what a feeling was. Something flickered in her now, watching the empty doorway, but it passed before she could hold it. Unnamed, it was gone. Unrepeatable. Her walls stored every reflection she had ever passed near. She scrolled through them like a catalog. A grey reef. A dying coral. The person she once watched for six months. None of it told her what happened inside her when she looked. A knock hit her door. Two of them stood outside. The small lavender cloud came first, a gold crown tipped on his puffed head, tiny sneakers stamped with crowns. Dom. He had lost a kingdom and trusted almost no one now. Behind him floated a mermaid with an oil-slick tail that no longer moved right. Petra. She had swum into a slick trying to save her reef, and it was making her sick. "You store reflections," Dom said. "I need to see a room I lost. My throne room. Before they took it." "I only keep rooms I have stood near," Aria said. "You stood near mine once." He did not soften it. "You just don't know which feeling to file it under." Aria did not understand. Petra crossed her arms. "You keep everything," Petra said. "But you file it wrong. You file by shape. Not by what it did to you." That landed. Aria pulled up her reef reflection again. She had labeled it grey coral, wide as a person, fourteen surfaces. Nothing about what changed in her. Petra pressed her hand flat to the grey coral in the mirror. "I used to rest my hand here when I was tired." Her voice stayed level. "Now look at me. Do you feel that?" Aria watched Petra's face. Something moved in her chest. A tightening. She did not lose it this time. She caught it. She held it still, the way she once held light on a stranger for six months. "There," she said. "That. When you touched the dead coral. Something pulled in me." "Name it," Petra said. "I don't have the name." "Then make one," said Dom. "You made this whole house from what you kept." Aria opened a new file. Not a room. Not a surface. A feeling. She marked it: the pull when Petra touched the grey coral. She tied it to the face, the tightening, the moment. One feeling, named and stored. The first she could find again. But a named feeling is a small thing beside a hundred unnamed ones. Aria looked at her walls, full of rooms she had never once labeled right, and understood how far she was from herself.
