Chapter 1

Every night, Arianna danced for the sea spirit, and every night the water stayed silent. She learned the old hula from her grandmother, who swore the reclusive spirit would one day bless a dancer and turn her steps into true ocean magic. Arianna wanted that blessing more than food or sleep. So she stood on the shoreline each dusk, her auburn hair sweeping the sand, her hips moving through the story her hands told. The spirit had to be near the water. That was the only rule she knew. Tonight the sea refused her. A sudden storm had ripped across the coast and churned the shallows into rough surf. Waves slammed the sand and dragged it back. Arianna stepped toward the foam and felt the pull grab her ankles. She dug her toes in and leaned back. One more step and the water would sweep her under. She could not dance where she could not stand. She backed off, soaked and shaking. The spirit only listened at the water's edge, and the water's edge would drown her. She stared at the black waves and understood she could not win this way. Then she remembered the stream. She lived in a cavern carved into a purple mountain, and a stream ran through its shadowy floor. That water came from the sea. It had to return to the sea. Water was water, her grandmother always said. Maybe the spirit swam in every drop. Arianna ran up the slope with the storm at her back. She ducked under the cave's jagged entrance and found the stream calm and clear, winding between wet stones. A small waterfall spilled at its mouth. No surf here. No pull. Just steady water and quiet. She kicked off the sand, planted her bare feet on the smooth rock, and began to dance. Her hands shaped the wave, the fish, the rising moon. Her hair swung in the lamplight. She danced the whole story, start to finish, with no waves to knock her down. The stream changed. The water brightened, then glowed pale blue, the same color as the shells she wore. A cool current wrapped her ankles, gentle this time, almost like fingers testing her step. Something in the stream was watching. Something had finally come close. Arianna held her breath and kept dancing. The glow pulsed with her movements, matching each sway of her hips. The spirit was here. Not in the raging sea, but in her own home, drawn up through the stream. The glow faded as her arms fell still. But the water stayed warm now, and a single voice rose from the stream, thin and old and curious. "You dance well for a girl on dry stone," it said. "But charm is not the same as skill. Show me you mean it." Arianna gripped the edge of her woven hammock to steady herself. The spirit had spoken at last. Now it wanted proof.
