Chapter 15

The photo followed them home. By morning it was everywhere. Arianna sat on her couch and scrolled the comments. Some called her lucky. Some called her a fan who got too close. One word stuck: hanger-on. Kylie made her own money, her own music, her own life. Arianna had a cat, a keyboard, and a rented apartment. She loved Kylie. But she still felt one step below her. Kylie came in from the balcony. She'd stayed the night. "You're quiet," she said. "They're not wrong," Arianna said. "You built everything you have. I just... showed up." Kylie sat beside her. "You wrote a song that beat thousands. You walked a mile in the cold to reach me." She frowned. "Don't let them decide who you are." But Arianna knew words wouldn't fix it. She needed to do something real. Something of her own. She stood. "I want you to move in here." Kylie blinked. "Here?" "Not the mansion. Here. My place." Arianna's voice shook, then steadied. "You've always been the one with the house, the studio, the name. If we're partners, it has to go both ways. Let me give you a home too." The apartment was small. Warm light fell across the shelves. A banner hung by the window—striped fabric, a red heart woven in cord. Arianna had made it days ago, a promise to herself that she'd be seen as a real partner. Now she pointed at it. "I made that before I had the nerve to say any of this," she said. "I meant it." Kylie walked to the banner. She touched the heart. For a long moment she said nothing. Arianna's stomach twisted. This was the risk. Kylie could laugh. Kylie could say her fans were right. "You know what the mansion feels like?" Kylie asked. "Empty. My best friend showed me people take. You keep giving." She turned. "Yes." "Yes?" "I'll move in." Kylie smiled. "But I'm buying groceries. I'm not a guest." They spent the afternoon making room. Kylie hung her jacket by the door. She set her phone on the shelf, face down. In the bedroom stood a small canopy bed, soft and covered, meant for two. Kylie sat on the edge and bounced once. "This is ours now," she said. Arianna sat beside her. For the first time, she wasn't the fan reaching up. She had offered something Kylie needed and Kylie had taken it. Not a picture. Not a song. A home. Then Kylie's phone buzzed on the shelf. She flipped it over. The label's name filled the screen. "They saw the photo," Kylie said. She read fast. Her smile faded. "They want us at a press event. Friday. To make it official on their terms." She looked up. "If we don't go, they say they'll spin the story themselves." Arianna had won her place inside the door. Now the whole world wanted to write what it meant.
