Chapter 9

Arianna played until her cold fingers warmed. She kept the melody small and honest. When she lifted her hands, Kylie sat close on the bench. The distance was gone, but Arianna could feel it hiding under Kylie's calm face. One wrong word could bring it back. "That was you," Kylie said. "Not a copy of me." She almost smiled. Then her eyes cooled. "My best friend played nice too. Right up until she took the person I loved." Arianna's stomach dropped. She knew this pain. She had heard it in every song on Kylie's sad EP. She wanted to say she'd never do that. But promises were cheap here. Everyone in this house wanted something from Kylie. "You're waiting for me to swear I'm different," Arianna said. "I won't." Kylie blinked. "Why not?" "Because your friend probably swore it too." Arianna's voice shook. She let it. "Words didn't stop her. So my words won't fix your fear. Only time will." The room went still. Kylie stared at her. Arianna's heart slammed. She was sure she'd said the wrong thing. She'd handed Kylie a reason to send her home. Instead Kylie laughed. It was soft and real, not the bright laugh from interviews. "You just told me not to trust you yet." "I told you the truth," Arianna said. "I'd rather earn it slow than fake it fast." Kylie stood. She crossed to a shelf near the window and picked up a small ornament. Two ribbons twisted into a heart, gold rings linked at the center. She turned it in her hands. "A fan sent me this once," Kylie said. "It says loyalty and mutual trust. I hated it. It felt like a lie people wanted from me." She looked at Arianna. "You just told me trust isn't a gift. It's a thing you build." She set the ornament on the piano, right in front of Arianna. "Keep it here," Kylie said. "When it feels earned, it'll mean something. Not before." Arianna's breath caught. This was not a wall. It was a door held open a crack. Kylie was letting her stay and try. "Stay tonight," Kylie said. "Not as a fan. As someone I might get to know." She reached out and squeezed Arianna's hand once. Her grip was warm. Then she let go before it meant too much. Arianna nodded. She didn't gush. She didn't quote a lyric. She just held Kylie's eyes and said, "Okay." Kylie moved toward the stairs. "Studio's downstairs when you're ready. Bring the new stuff." Arianna looked at the twisted ribbons on the piano. The fragile evening hadn't broken. She had passed the first test by refusing to fake the answer Kylie feared. But the ornament sat empty of meaning, waiting. Now she had to fill it. Now she had to prove, over real days, that she would never become the person who had broken Kylie's heart.
