Ash's Arc

Ash lifts his head from the dirt where he's been tracing spirals with the tip of his hoof. The pattern is wrong again — too tight at the center, the lines crossing where they should curve. He lets out a breath and drags his hoof across the marks, erasing them. The forest is quiet except for the rustle of leaves overhead. Movement catches his eye past the mossy fallen log that marks the clearing's edge. A fox limps into view, one hind leg held at an awkward angle. It stops at the log and watches him. Ash goes still. His horn begins to stir before he's ready — a faint warmth spreading through the bone, then a sharp pull like something waking up too fast. The fox limps closer. Ash breathes slow and deliberate, trying to settle the heat building in his horn, but the magic doesn't wait. It flares bright and wild, and the fox yelps and bolts back into the trees. The grass where the light touched smolders at the edges. Ash stands alone in the clearing, the warmth in his horn fading to nothing, and knows he failed again. He walks to the small barn nestled into the hillside behind him, its round door standing open. Inside, dried herbs hang from the rafters and clean straw lines the floor — a space he prepared for wounded creatures that might need shelter. He sinks down onto the straw and stares at his horn. The black swirls seem darker now, like they're mocking him. He thought waiting for the right moment would be enough, that patience would give him control. But the magic doesn't care about his readiness. It moves when it wants, and he's still just guessing. He closes his eyes and pictures the stone markings again, the spirals and crossing lines he copied so carefully. Somewhere in those patterns is the answer he's missing. Tomorrow he'll go back to the beginning and trace them all over again.
