Chapter 2

The trees swallowed the path behind Ash. She walked with the letter under her coat and one hard rule in her head. She could not shout a name. She had to find a person by the silence where their voice should be. But she had never listened that way. So she listened to everything, and everything blurred. By midday she found a small market at a bend in the woods. People bartered under cloth roofs. A man argued over the price of nuts. A woman scolded her son. Two girls sang while they braided reeds. Ash moved through them and strained to hear. She caught voices everywhere. None of them felt empty. She wanted a sound, and she was drowning in sound. She circled the stalls twice. She passed a hunched figure at the edge, hood up, hands sorting stones. She barely glanced. No voice came from that corner, so her ears skipped over it. She kept hunting for a person who spoke wrong. She walked straight past the one who did not speak at all. By dusk the market emptied. Ash sat on a log, angry at herself. She had listened for a broken voice. But the letter said forgotten. A forgotten voice made no sound to break. It made a hole. She had been chasing noise when she should have chased the quiet. She closed her eyes. She stopped trying to hear people. She tried to feel where the sound thinned. Sellers packed carts. Wheels creaked. Then she found it. A cold spot in the noise, like a dropped stitch. One corner gave back nothing at all. She opened her eyes and walked toward the hole. The hooded figure still sat there, sorting stones by feel. Ash stopped close. "You," she said. The figure looked up. The mouth opened, then shut. No word came. The hands lifted, made shapes in the air, and dropped. Ash understood. This person had no voice to give. Her chest went tight. She had walked past this stranger hours ago. She pulled the letter out. The wax cracked wider in her fingers. She held it forward. "I think this is yours." The stranger stared at the blank envelope. The eyes filled, but the hands did not reach for it. Instead the hands pushed the air, slow and firm. Not yet. Then the stranger pointed past Ash, back toward the tower, and drew a shape she did not know. Ash turned. Far off through the trees, the tower's runes glowed faint against the dark. The stranger stood, gathered the stones, and walked the other way, deeper into the woods. Ash had found the one who forgot their own voice. She had learned to hear the silence. But the person she sought would not take the letter here. They wanted her to follow, and the trail led back the way she came.
