Chapter 6

Ash walked until the trees thinned and the market opened before her. The stranger stood at the far edge, sorting stones into piles by size. Ash knew that stillness. She had passed it once and missed it. This was the person who had refused her letter and pointed her back to the tower. The same person the carriage had carried away on the last night. Ash held the envelope tight and crossed the sorting ground. The stranger looked up. Their hands stopped over a gray stone. Recognition sharpened their eyes, then hardened into a shake of the head. They lifted one hand toward the tower, the same gesture as before. Go back. Ash did not move. "I know now," Ash said. "You rode the glass carriage away from the tower. You lost your voice there, on the last night. This letter is yours." She held it out. The stranger's hand dropped. Their mouth opened, but no sound came. They shook their head harder and turned away, reaching for another stone. They did not believe her. They had no reason to. She had come once with a blank envelope and been sent off. Words alone would turn her away again. Ash needed proof. She had none in her hands. But she had walked a trail no stranger could have followed by guessing. She stepped around the stone piles and stood where the stranger could not look past her. "The carriage still sits in the clearing beyond the tower," Ash said. "Glass, with gold on the frame. A cushioned seat inside. The runes on its door name the last night. I read them. I followed them here." The stranger froze. No one else knew that carriage. No one else had found the clearing. Slowly they raised their eyes to Ash's face, and this time they did not shake their head. Their hand rose again, but not toward the tower. It reached for the envelope. Ash laid it in their palm. The stranger held it with both hands, the way a person holds something they thought was lost. Their fingers found the sealed edge. They looked at Ash, and their eyes were wet. But they did not break the seal. They pressed the envelope to their chest and pointed at it, then at their own throat, then shook their head. Ash understood the meaning like a door opening. The letter was theirs. They knew it now. But they could not open it while their voice was still lost. The seal would answer to a voice, and they had none to give. The stranger took Ash's hand and closed it back over the letter. They pushed it toward her, gentle this time, not a refusal but a plea. Find the voice first. Then the letter could be opened. Ash held the envelope again. The recipient was found. But the letter stayed sealed, and now she had to recover a voice lost on the last night before it could ever be read.
