Chapter 1
Ash Thornveil kept people at arm's length, and it was starving him. At the market that morning, three fae asked to walk with him. He gave each the same flat nod and moved on. They loved his grey eyes and dark, rugged face. None of them saw the shy man underneath, and Ash had stopped hoping one would. He wanted to be known. He just had no place safe enough to let anyone try.
So every friendship stayed cold. He greeted, he bowed, he left. His sleek black-and-white ferret rode his shoulder through those meetings, watching strangers Ash would not let close. By dusk his jaw ached from smiling at people he did not trust.
That evening he walked far from the village, past the moon Goddess's lake. An old watchtower stood alone at the water's edge. Moss draped its cracked stone. Vines split its walls. No one came here. Ash had passed it a hundred times and never stopped.
A whimper reached him from the tower's broken door.
Inside crouched a wolf pup, small and shaking. Silver marks swirled through its grey fur. Its eyes were wet and sorrowful, and it had clearly wandered far. Ash froze. He expected the pup to bolt, the way every creature shied from strangers.
It did not bolt. It limped straight to him and pressed its head to his boot.
Ash knelt. His ferret slid down his arm and touched noses with the pup. For the first time all day, Ash felt his shoulders drop. No one here wanted his face. No one asked him to perform. The tower held only the pup, the ferret, and the quiet sound of water outside.
He stayed until the moon rose through the shattered roof. He gathered dry wood and built a small fire in the old hearth. He cleared fallen stone from one corner and swept it smooth. The pup curled against his leg and slept. Ash spoke to it, low and easy, saying things he had never said to another fae. The words came without fear. The walls kept his secret.
When he finally spoke his real name aloud, plain and soft, no one flinched and no one swooned. The pup only sighed in its sleep.
Ash understood then what he had found. Not a ruin. A place that was his. Here he could lower his guard. Here he could be the shy man, not the beautiful mask.
He pressed his palm to the cold stone and made a decision. He would return. He would bring blankets, food, a lamp. He would make this tower a home no one else knew.
And someday, if he ever found the one person who saw past his face, he would bring them here. This would be the test. The one he trusted enough to show the tower would be the one who truly knew him.
Ash banked the fire and looked at the sleeping pup. He was no longer alone, and for the first time, that did not frighten him.
