Chapter 7

The stranger left before dawn, and by the next night the bar ran itself. Coins filled the box faster than Asher could count them. He should have felt good. Instead, he watched Tucker lean close to a woman at the counter, one thumb hooked in his belt, chains catching the lamplight. The till was fat. But Asher had plans for that money, and they weren't Tucker's plans. Asher wanted better benches. A second cask. A door that locked, now that men knew where the wizard's fighters gathered. He set a fresh slab of oak on the trestles and dragged in two sturdy chairs he'd traded for that morning. Every coin from the till, he meant to pour back into the room until it could hold a crowd and a fight both. Tucker had other ideas. He'd already spent a share of the drink money on a case of good brandy no farmhand could afford. He poured it free for the prettiest guests and let them lean on his arm. "Men drink where things shine," he said, same as always. "Women too. They tell their friends. That's worth more than a bench." "It's worth nothing if the roof caves during the fight we're planning," Asher said. He set a coin on the counter between them. "Our deal was a share of the drink money. Not the whole box, and not a free tab for anyone who smiles at you." Tucker didn't argue. That was his way. He topped off a mug, slid it down the oak, and only then looked back. "You bought a shell," he said. "I filled it. Empty rooms don't make coin. Full ones do." He nodded at the packed benches. "Half these men came back because I remembered their names." Asher looked at the room. Tucker wasn't wrong. The bar was still full, still loud, still Tucker's kind of room. But now Asher held the coin that built it. Word would move again: the grain house wasn't just where fighters drank. It was Asher's, run his way, ready for what came.
