Chapter 5

The text came at noon. One line, no map. "Behind the old mill. Sundown. Come alone." Asher read it three times. He didn't know the mill. He couldn't scout it. He couldn't learn the ground before he stood on it. His thumb hovered over the phone. The old itch rose in his chest, the one that turned every meeting into a game to win. If he walked in blind and nervous, he'd grab for control. He'd make it a contest. And that would break everything he'd built with her. So he made one choice. He would not prepare the place. He would prepare himself. He opened the drawer where he kept his tools and pulled out two black bracelets he'd finished last night. Thick leather. Sharp spikes. A steel plate on each. He'd stamped the words himself, letter by letter. One said Sammy was his. One said he was hers. Not a trophy. Not a prize he'd won off her. A thing that only meant something if she took it freely. He rode to the mill with no plan but that. The building sat quiet, walls gray, weeds high. Sammy leaned against the wall with her arms crossed, the choker still at her throat. She watched him climb off the bike. "You came alone," she said. "Figured you'd scout it first. Show up early. Case the place." "I thought about it," Asher said. "I didn't." Her eyebrow lifted. "Why not?" "Because then I'd try to win it." The words came out plain. "And there's nothing here to win. I had to stop myself before I started." She pushed off the wall. Her boots crunched the gravel. She stopped close, closer than their old fights ever let them stand, and said nothing. Testing him. Waiting for the jab, the challenge, the score. It didn't come. Asher held out the bracelets on his open palm. "Made these," he said. "One's mine. One's yours. Only works if you want it." Sammy looked down at them. She read both plates. Her jaw tightened, the way it did when something hit harder than she let on. She picked up the one with his claim on it. Turned it over. The spikes caught the low sun. "You didn't make it a bet," she said. "No." She snapped it around her wrist. Then she took the other and grabbed his hand and buckled it onto him herself, rough, sure. "There," she said. "Now we match." Asher breathed out. He'd walked in blind and hadn't reached for a fight. The urge was still in him, but he'd held it down. Sammy didn't let go of his wrist. "My mother can't know about this," she said. "She hears I'm wearing your name, she locks the garage and keeps me in it. You understand?" Asher understood. The ground had moved again. Her mother stood between them now, and Sammy had just told him so.
