Chapter 1

Ashley Cooper had built her whole life around not being touched. She ran the student council, planned every dance, and owned forty long-sleeve tops so no one asked why she never showed her arms. Under the left sleeve, her arm was bone. Just bone. She wanted one thing more than the crown or the votes: a boy who could hold her hand, learn the truth, and stay. Tyler Marsh, the football captain with the blonde Mohawk, kept reaching for that hand. And he was getting close. He caught her by the lockers after last bell. "You always pull away," he said. He smiled like it was a joke, but his eyes weren't joking. His fingers slid down her sleeve toward her wrist. Ashley yanked her arm back. The sleeve slipped an inch. Cold white knuckles flashed in the hallway light. Tyler's smile fell. He stared at her hand, then at her face. "Ashley," he said. "What was that?" She ran. She didn't stop until she was home, in the kitchen, her back against the counter and her chest heaving. Her father sat at the table with a stack of receipts. Danny Cooper, the most boring accountant in town, pushed his round glasses up his nose. "You look like the sky fell," he said. He didn't look up from his adding machine. "A boy almost saw my arm," Ashley said. Danny stopped adding. He set down his pencil, slow and careful. "Then it's time you talked to your mother," he said. Mandy Cooper came in the back door in heels, her dark hair loose, a gym bag on her shoulder. She was the prettiest woman in town and she knew it. She looked at Ashley's face and dropped the bag. "He touched it, didn't he," Mandy said. Not a question. Ashley nodded. Her eyes burned. "I can't keep this up. Every dance, every hallway, he tries to hold my hand. Sooner or later he'll grab it. And then he'll scream and run and tell the whole school." Mandy crossed the kitchen and took both of Ashley's hands. Her thumb pressed the bone through the sleeve. She didn't flinch. "I've hidden things my whole life too," she said. "Trust me. Hiding costs more than the truth does." "You want me to just show him," Ashley whispered. "I want you to stop letting him almost find out," Mandy said. "Almost is worse. Almost is a bomb." Ashley pulled out her phone. Her thumb shook. She found Tyler's name. She typed: *Meet me tomorrow before school. There's something I have to show you.* She stared at the words. Once she sent them, she couldn't take them back. Danny watched. Mandy nodded once. Ashley pressed send. The reply came fast. *I'll be there.* Her secret was no longer hers to keep hidden. Tomorrow, Tyler would see the bone. And she had chosen it herself.
