Chapter 1

Aswald Silverleaf swept the last of the autumn leaves from his doorstep when he heard the footsteps. Two sets, not one. The forest had told him the young woman would come alone — its silence had been clear on that. He straightened, broom in hand, and watched the path. They rounded the bend together: a young woman with dark hair and cautious eyes, and beside her, a broad-shouldered man whose hand never left the knife at his belt. The woman's gaze found the antlered crown above Aswald's door — antlers wrapped in living vines, marking this place as a keeper's dwelling. Her expression shifted from uncertainty to recognition. The man saw it too, and his jaw tightened. He stepped slightly in front of her. "This is the one you've been asking about?" His voice carried warning. The young woman nodded, then met Aswald's eyes directly. "I came to learn," she said. "He came to make sure I'd be safe." Aswald set down his broom and chose his words with care. "The knowledge I keep is old and requires patience. If you're willing to give that, you're welcome here." He looked at the man. "Both of you, for today. The forest will show me in time if she's meant to stay." The man's shoulders loosened just slightly, though his hand remained near his weapon. Aswald stepped inside and returned with a small wooden box. He opened it to show the woman what lay inside: a necklace with a stone that caught the light like living forest. Greens and golds shifted across its surface. "My teacher gave this to me when I first came to learn," he said. "It's been passed down for seven generations of keepers." The woman reached out, then stopped, her fingers hovering above the box. "I don't know if I'm worthy of this," she said quietly. Aswald closed the box gently. "Neither did I, at first." He met her eyes. "But I showed up. That was enough to start." The man beside her exhaled, his hand finally dropping from his knife. The woman nodded once, and Aswald could see she understood: the real test wasn't receiving the necklace, but choosing to return tomorrow. The man positioned himself near the vine-covered doorway as Aswald led the young woman inside. His stance remained watchful, but no longer hostile. Aswald showed her the shelves where he kept his records, the dried herbs hanging from the ceiling, the worn chair where students had sat before her. She touched nothing, but her eyes took in everything with careful attention. When they stepped back outside, the man straightened. "Tomorrow, then," the young woman said. "At first light." Aswald nodded. He watched them walk back down the path together, the man's hand resting now on her shoulder instead of his blade. The forest had been wrong about her coming alone, but it had been right about her coming. That was what mattered.
