Chapter 2

The servant was gone, but his trail was not. Yugi stood in the empty market and pointed to the ground. "He went that way," he said. "But it's far. I can't run all day." Atem stirred inside the puzzle. He felt the boy's tired legs, the sweat on his back. The servant would reach his master long before they caught up. One body. Two souls. No way to chase without wearing Yugi down to nothing. Atem took over. He knelt and touched the servant's card case, dropped in the fight. It was warm. A card had slipped free. On it stood a red horse with gold across its chest and mane. Atem felt the drawing pull at him, like a name half-remembered. He had ridden once. He knew it in his bones, though the memory stayed dark. "A spirit," Atem said aloud. "Not just paper." He held the card up. The gold caught light that was not there. He spoke to it the way he had spoken to his spellcaster in the duel. "Come out. I need to ride." The card grew hot. Light poured from it and formed hooves, then legs, then the whole radiant stallion. It stamped the ground and snorted. It was solid. Real. Yugi's voice came small inside. "Atem. Is it safe?" Atem laid a hand on the warm flank. "It carries riders. It will carry us both." He climbed on. The stallion's back held his weight without strain. Then Atem did something new. He let the warmth fade halfway, so Yugi shared the saddle with him, both of them holding the golden mane. "Grip tight," Atem said. Yugi grabbed on. "Okay," the boy said. "I've got it." The stallion ran. It did not tire. It did not pound the ground the way a real horse would. It glided, fast and smooth, and Yugi's legs never had to move. The trail unwound before them. Atem read it—broken grass, a dropped glove, the scuff of a running man. The servant's lead shrank with every stride. By dusk they crested a rise. Below sat a shelter beside the trail, its door swinging. Fresh boot prints led inside and out again. The servant had stopped here. He had rested. Now he was moving once more, but close—close enough to catch. The stallion slowed and stood steady beneath them. "We found where he stopped," Yugi said. He slid down, steady on his feet, not tired at all. Atem stayed a moment on the stallion's back. The chase was possible now. The boy was safe, and the trail was hot. But the tracks split at the shelter's edge—two sets, not one. The servant was no longer running alone. Someone had met him here. And they had gone on together, toward the master Atem hunted.
