Chapter 1

Atesa Crimp collected debts in favors, secrets, and years, never coin. Each payment became a patch sewn onto her frost-white coat. She wanted one patch above all others. The baker who hid in Karridale held a secret that could break the ruling house, and his debt was years overdue. But the coat that marked her trade had become a trap. Everyone in Karridale knew the white coat on sight. She learned how badly today. She spotted the baker loading sacks onto a cart. The moment he saw her white coat, he dropped the sacks and ran into the crowd. By the time she pushed through, he was gone. The third debtor to vanish this week. The coat collected debts, but now it warned them first. Atesa walked until the town thinned into woods. She needed a new skin. In a trader's stall near the tree line, she found a merchant's travel cloak, deep green with red and gold trim. Worn, common, forgettable. She traded a secret for it, the kind that cost the merchant nothing and her less. Then she folded her white coat under her arm and pulled the cloak's hood low. But hiding the coat felt like hiding her own hands. The patches were her record. Her proof. She could not simply bury them in a bag. She climbed higher, following a stream until she reached a cave set into the mountain. Old carvings framed its mouth, a woman's face on one side, a moon's on the other. Frost roses grew in a thick cluster beside the entrance, their petals hard and blue with ice. Something moved in the dark of the cave. A dire wolf stepped out, its coat black and streaked with gray, its eyes pale and steady. It did not growl. It watched her the way she watched debtors, measuring what she owed. Atesa stood still. She had made her living reading when to run and when to hold. She held. "I'm not here for you," she said. She set her white coat down on a flat stone between the frost roses. The wolf's gaze followed the coat, then returned to her. It stepped aside. It was letting her pass, or letting her stay. She did not test which. Atesa hid the coat deep in the cave, wrapped in cloth, out of weather and thieves. Now no one would see the white coat coming. In the green cloak she was no one. She could walk up to the baker's door as a stranger and be inside before he knew her face. She left the cave in the merchant's cloak. The wolf watched from the dark. For the first time in years, Atesa walked into Karridale and no one stepped aside. No one hid. She passed the baker's shop and he nodded at her, a stranger, and kept sweeping. She smiled under the hood. Tomorrow she would knock, and he would open the door himself.
