Chapter 8

Dawn came without lanterns on the cliffs. The family slept behind the barred monastery door. Atsuki sat with the whole pendant in his palm and turned it in the gray light. Both halves fit now, edge to edge, but the script running along the gold still refused him. Faded letters. A language older than anything he could read. Until he read it, the pendant proved nothing. He held two families joined and could name neither. So he left the family with the last of Vera's bread and climbed down to find the one person in Eldergrove who had read this mark before. The moss-covered library sat quiet under its green skin. Stellara Rootweaver stood among the shelves, running one bark-brown finger down a spine as if counting. She was a dryad, older than the town, cut from her tree long ago. She had been the first to name his pendant a marriage mark. She did not turn when he entered. "You came back whole," she said. "Both halves." "I can't read it." Atsuki set the pendant on the table. "The oath is here. The names are here. I can't reach them." Stellara bent over the gold. Her star-lit eyes moved slow across the letters. For a long moment she said nothing. Then she named a plain problem plainly. "This is dead script. No living tongue speaks it." She straightened. "I read it. Once. Before your grandfather's grandfather." "Then read it now," Atsuki said. She touched the first curve of letters. "This half is your house. Nightwhisper." Her finger slid to the second. "This half is theirs. The family you carried up the cliff." She stopped. Named the last part once. "Below both names, one line. A child born of the two. Bound to no house because both broke the oath." Atsuki gripped the table edge. "A child." "Tanned skin. Black hair." Stellara looked at him without softening. "You." The room went still. He had spent twenty years matching no face in Eldergrove. Now the gold in front of him held the reason. Not one lost house. Two, joined and then torn, and himself the seam. "So I belong to both," Atsuki said. "You belong to the oath they broke." Stellara pushed the pendant back toward him. "That is why they hunt it. Not to erase a name. To erase the proof it ever joined." He closed his fist around the whole pendant. He could read it now. Every letter. He was the last binding of two houses, and the priest who wanted them dead had wanted this line ended most of all. "Matthias will search the monastery," Atsuki said. "Then he already knows what you just learned." Stellara turned back to her shelves. "You have a name now. He has a reason to end it." Atsuki left the library at a run. He knew his house at last. He also knew the priest would come for it before nightfall.
