Chapter 4

The compact was sealed, but Auhrnyah slept badly. She had promised herself to Nerion. Still, she did not know him. She knew his lies and his dying children. She did not know his heart. A marriage built on a stranger's word was a marriage built on nothing. So she sent for him at dawn and told him where to meet her. They walked to the small chapel at the edge of the crystal fields. Its walls glowed with amethyst and pale mushrooms. Inside, faceted light fell across the stone floor. Auhrnyah's orbs drifted close, quiet, watching him. "Why bring me here?" Nerion asked. His ember eyes moved over the glowing walls. "Before I marry you, I want the truth," she said. "Not your terms. You. Sit with me. Answer what I ask." He frowned, then sat on the cold floor across from her. His marks pulsed slow. "Ask." So she asked. What he feared. What he loved. What he had done that shamed him. At first he gave short, careful answers, the way a prince guards a wall. She waited him out. She did not fill his silences. "When I first dreamed of you, I thought you were a way to save my world," he finally said. "A door, not a person. I planned to take your crystals and leave you behind." He looked at his hands. "I am ashamed of that now. You could have let my children die. You chose to share instead. No one on my world would have done the same." That answer cost him something. She saw it in his lowered head. She told him her own fears then. That her people would name her a traitor. That she had gambled two worlds on a plan with no proof. "You carry that alone," Nerion said. "You should not." They talked until the light shifted on the walls. Slowly the stranger became someone she could read. She saw a man who had lied out of fear, not cruelty. A man who now held her burden as his own. At last Nerion reached into his belt. He drew out a small ring. Silver, worked fine, set with a stone that shifted from deep purple to green as it caught the light. "On my world, we do not give gifts before a union," he said. "We give them after, when we are sure. I am sure now." He held it out. "Not because a treaty binds me. Because I know you, and I choose you." Auhrnyah took the ring. She slid it onto her finger. The stone glowed against her lavender skin. For the first time, the marriage felt like a bond and not a bargain. "Then it is real," she said. "Now we tell your people. And mine." She met his eyes. Both would call it surrender. She no longer feared facing them alone.
