Aunlon's Arc

Chapter 3 of 4

The trail egg cracks at dawn. Aunlon hears it before they see it—a sound like ice splitting, sharp and final. They're awake instantly, all four eyes wide. Kipril sits up beside them, hand already reaching for the thermal core. The shell breaks clean down the middle, and something dark and wet unfolds inside. The eldest emerges slowly, scales pale as milk, limbs unsteady. Aunlon wants to touch them, to help, but knows they shouldn't. The hatchling needs to do this part alone. Kipril stays back too, breathing hard, watching. The eldest opens their eyes—huge and green—and looks straight at Aunlon. Something in Aunlon's chest breaks open, bigger than they expected. This is the moment they wanted someone to tell. But they can't speak. They can only look at Kipril, who's already looking back, and that's enough. Kipril moves to the archway at the nest's edge, where vines glow soft blue in the morning light. They sit down cross-legged and stay there, hands resting on their knees. "I need to be here when the others hatch," Kipril says. "So they know me." Aunlon's throat tightens. The bonding vigil—Kipril understood without being told. The eggs inside Aunlon's pouch stir slightly, responding to Kipril's presence. The eldest crawls toward the broken shell pieces, curious, and Aunlon catches one fragment before it rolls away. The white shell glows faintly where the cracks spread widest, still warm. Aunlon sets the shell fragment at the archway's base, right where Kipril sits. A marker for this place, this moment. The eldest hatchling settles between them, already complete—not perfect, but themselves. Kipril reaches out slowly and the eldest doesn't pull away. Aunlon watches Kipril's hand rest gently on pale scales and realizes: they're not just sharing the hatching anymore. They're building something that will hold all of them. The other eggs pulse once, twice, and Aunlon knows they'll need Kipril here for each one. They're ready for that now.
