Chapter 5

Aurora raised her hands to the noon light. The cracks had widened since morning. Thin lines ran across both palms, splitting toward her wrists. Where they cut, her pink glow leaked out and faded gray. She could feel it draining, like warmth slipping from a cooling stone. The charm had healed her burn. Now it was taking the rest of her, piece by piece. "They're spreading," she said. She kept her voice steady. "The cracks. They're pulling my light out." Vivienne stepped to the edge of the dark doorway. She did not cross into the sun. Her red eyes moved over Aurora's hands. "How long?" "I don't know. But if they reach my heart, there won't be any sunlight left." Aurora's throat tightened. "You asked me to stay myself. I don't think I can." Vivienne was silent. Then she turned back into the house. "The charm. Give it to me." Aurora lifted the charm from her chest. It still shimmered, its pink and green jewel shifting slow. She held it out across the line of shadow. For the first time, her bare fingers brushed Vivienne's. Cool skin. No scorch. Vivienne did not flinch. Vivienne turned the charm in her hand. "The hex on my house runs on the same old magic. It drains too. I've studied it for sixty years." She pressed her thumb against the back of the jewel. "The charm pulls your light to pay for the healing. It won't stop on its own. You have to give it something else to pull." "There's nothing else." "There's the garden." Vivienne looked past her. Below the mansion grew a tangle of wild blooms and thorns, half-wild, half-dead. One tiger lily stood tall among them, its striped petals open, humming a thin note in the breeze. "Those flowers hold old power. Spooky things grow deep roots. Feed the charm their life instead of yours." Aurora understood. She ran down the slope to the tangled garden. The cracks burned now, hot and cold at once. She pressed the charm into the soil among the roots. She spoke the mending words again, but changed the last one, aiming the pull downward. The charm flared. Light poured from the flowers into the jewel. The singing lily's note cracked and went silent. The eerie blooms browned and curled. Thorns blackened. The garden gave up its life in a slow gray wave. Aurora felt the drain turn away from her hands. She gasped. The cracks stopped widening. The gray lines filled back pink, slow, then steady. Her glow returned, warm and whole. She lifted her hands. The skin had sealed. Faint silver scars remained where the cracks had been, but they no longer leaked. The light stayed in her. Behind her the garden lay dead. The tiger lily drooped, its song gone. Aurora pressed her palm to the dark soil. One small shoot of green pushed up under her warmth. The old magic would come back. It only needed sun. She climbed the slope. Vivienne waited in the doorway. Aurora stepped across the line of shadow, into the dark house, for the first time. The interior hex did not repel her. Her light did not fade. She stood inside, glowing soft pink and purple in a room that had not held warmth in sixty years. "You stayed yourself," Vivienne said. "I did." Aurora reached out. She laid both hands against Vivienne's face. Cool skin under warm fingers. No burning. No draining. Just touch. Vivienne closed her eyes and leaned into it. "And I kept the light. The garden paid instead." Vivienne opened her eyes. "Then there's nothing left to fix." "One thing." Aurora smiled. "You asked me to stay. I want to stay forever. As your bride." Vivienne did not answer in words. She took Aurora's scarred hand and pressed it to her own chest, over the still place where a heartbeat should have been. Then she led her deeper into the dark house, room by room, naming each one. Aurora's glow lit the halls as they walked. Where her light touched the walls, the old hex thinned and curled back, like frost under morning. They married at dusk, at the edge where the mansion's shadow met the last of the day. Aurora wore sunlight. Vivienne wore black. Aurora set her warm hand in Vivienne's cold one and did not burn. The sun that had once been a danger now lived safely inside the dark house, and the woman who had lived alone for sixty years lived alone no longer. Outside, below the hill, a single green shoot broke the dead garden's soil and turned its face toward the light.
