Chapter 30

The light closed where the three masters had gone. Avi Marie stood in the great cathedral among the witnesses, holding the folded page. She had her answer at last. But the masters above had looked at her without thanks. They had not welcomed her. They had weighed her, the way a man weighs a thing to keep or throw away. She had seen too much. She knew that now. To let her go down carrying the truth was a risk they had not yet chosen to take. The rift above the spires stayed open. No hand reached down to guide her home. The crowd began to thin. Guardian angels moved along the walls, watching her, not the doors. Avi Marie understood. They were not deciding how to escort her. They were deciding whether she should descend at all. Azrael crossed the floor to her side. He had climbed every step of this with her, an angel who dressed in white and trusted no one, least of all the powers above. He spoke low, flat as always. "They have not sent word down. That means they are still talking." "About me," Avi Marie said. "About you." He glanced at the guardians. "A witness who saw the whole ledger read. They buried one man for saying no. You said more, and louder." Avi Marie looked at the watching angels. Fear pressed at her chest. But she had not climbed this high to wait for their verdict. "Then I will not let them decide in the dark," she said. She turned to the crowd still filling the hall. "You heard the clerk's note. You heard the seal named. If I go down and never speak again, you will know why." The words carried up under the vaulted roof. Faces turned. A murmur spread through the witnesses. The guardians along the walls stopped moving. To silence her now, in front of all of them, would prove every word she had said. One guardian rose toward the rift. He was gone a long moment. Avi Marie held Azrael's eyes and did not breathe. Then the guardian returned and landed before her. "You may go down," he said. His voice was stiff. "The masters above will not act on you today. The realm has heard you. They will not add your silence to the ledger." Relief broke through her, sharp and cold. She had forced their hand with the crowd, not with power. "And after today?" she asked. The guardian did not answer. He stepped back and let the passage open wide. Avi Marie let out her breath. She would descend. She would carry the truth home. But the guardian's silence about tomorrow told her plainly the masters above had only delayed their choice. She had won her way down. She had not yet won her safety, and now the highest powers knew exactly who she was.
