Chapter 1

Azran Thornweave wanted one thing the Circle of Eldervein had never granted: recognition as an archmage of both arcane and druidic magic. Tonight, alone on his treehouse balcony, he tried again to prove it possible. He gripped his crystal-bladed staff and pulled two powers into it at once. Arcane fire coiled from his fingers. Wild green growth answered from the wood grain under his palm. The two spells hit each other and refused to join. Sparks burst against his knuckles. A tangle of vines shot out, then blackened and curled to ash. The staff bucked in his grip like a live thing. Azran clenched his teeth and pushed harder, forcing the fire and the forest to meet in the crystal blade. The blade flashed white. The recoil threw him back against the rail. His legs folded. He landed hard on the wooden planks, breath gone, hands shaking so badly he could not lift the staff. This was the ninth failure since sundown. Each blend drained him worse than the last. He stared up at the hanging lanterns strung around his home. Their light held steady, patient, alive. He had never wondered why. Now he crawled to the balcony steps and down to the old lantern post that stood beside the tree's roots. Moss covered its cracked stone. The lantern at its crown glowed warm and even, never flickering, though no oil fed it. Azran had lit it years ago with a single spell and forgotten it. He pressed his palm to the cold stone and reached inside the light with his senses. He felt it then. The glow was not one magic pretending to be calm. It was two. Arcane spark and living moss, layered, not forced together. The stone gave the fire something to rest in. The moss gave the spark a body to feed. Neither pushed. They took turns. Azran had been trying to fuse the two spells into one. That was the mistake. He rose, legs still weak, and lifted his staff. This time he did not slam the powers together. He cast the druid growth first and let it settle into the crystal. Then, slow as breath, he fed arcane fire into the spaces between the leaves. The blade did not buck. Green light and gold light braided along its length and held. No sparks. No ash. His hands stopped shaking. The staff hummed in his grip, warm and whole, and stayed lit. Azran laughed out loud in the dark. He had done it. Both magics, one weapon, no cost. He could stand before the Circle now and show them what they swore could not be done. Then the woven light in the blade pulsed once, brighter, and did not dim. He tried to release it. The spell would not let go. The braided power spread down the staff toward his wrist, and he realized he had learned how to start it, not how to stop it.
