Chapter 2

Azria stepped out of the ruined cottage with the sealed book pressed to her chest. The night air was cold. Then the obsidian stone woke against her skin. It hummed low, then climbed to a whine she knew too well. Death was near again. She had no walls left to hide behind. "Not now," she whispered. She scanned the dark. Broken fence. Dead trees. No shelter within reach. The hum meant she had minutes, maybe less. Ash came through the window behind her. He heard the stone at once. His face hardened. "It found us fast," he said. "The cottage draws them. We can't stay." "Where, then?" Azria turned on him. He'd killed the last corpse, but she still didn't know if he'd run when the next one came. "You keep saying you know things. Prove it. Now." Ash didn't flinch. He pointed past the trees. "A cave. Rock and green cover the mouth. Dead things won't crowd through a gap that tight. I've hidden there before." She heard branches snap in the dark. Something dragged itself closer, slow and stiff. The stone shrieked. Azria ran. Ash led. The ground sloped down. Vines slapped her face. Then she saw it: a slab of gray rock swallowed in thick moss and hanging leaves. A narrow black slit split the stone. The opening looked barely wide enough for a body. "Squeeze in," Ash said. "Book first. Keep it dry." Azria turned sideways and pushed through. Rock scraped her shoulders. The stone's whine dropped the moment she crossed inside. She stared. The humming faded to nothing. Ash slid in after her. "The rock hides you," he said. "They can't sense what they can't reach." He crouched and caught his breath. Outside, the corpse reached the cave mouth. A gray hand groped at the gap. It could not fit. It moaned and clawed the stone, then gave up and shuffled off. Azria didn't breathe until the sound died. She was alive. She had shelter. And now she had time. Ash watched her set the book down. "You want to open it," he said. "So do I. But that seal isn't cloth. It's his work. Force it and it burns." Azria ran a finger along the red cord. Then she felt something odd beneath the front cover. A stiff edge, tucked under the leather. She worked it loose. A folded sheet slid free, its edges soft with age, the ink faded brown. She unfolded it. A few lines. A name at the bottom she didn't know, and a place. "That's his hand," Ash said quietly. He leaned closer. "He left directions. To where he made these." Azria read the faded words twice. The cave had saved her life. But the letter changed everything. The craftsman wasn't just alive. He'd expected her to come looking. And now she knew exactly where to go.
