Chapter 7

The low woods swallowed the last of the daylight. Azria followed her stone's warm pulse until the ground opened before her. A wide pit sank into the earth, ringed with ferns and hanging roots. Black water sat still at the bottom. This was the hollow from the mud-stained letter. The maker had gone down here and never climbed out. She set the chained chest on the moss and knelt beside it. Ash crouched across from her. He had bought his place at her side with a blade and a promise, and he still watched every move she made like a man counting coins. "That box has stayed shut through everything," he said. "What makes you think it opens now?" "He left it for me," Azria said. "He left the necklace, the letter, all of it. This too." She ran her fingers over the iron. The chain wrapped it twice and met at a lock shaped like the maker's symbol. No keyhole. Only the mark, worn smooth. She lifted the obsidian stone from her chest and pressed it against the lock. Nothing. She pulled the faded letter from her coat and held it to the light of the water. The ink had almost washed away. But near the bottom, under the ruined lines, she found a shape she knew. The maker's symbol, drawn small, with three marks below it. "It's not a lock," she said. "It's a pattern." She pressed the symbol on the chest, then the three points around it, in the order the letter showed. The iron clicked. The chain slid loose and dropped into the ferns. Ash went still. Azria lifted the lid. Inside lay a second stone, black as her own, wrapped in cloth. Beneath it sat a folded map, the ink fresh where the letter's had faded. She unfolded it. It showed the pit, the water, and a path below the surface leading deeper into the earth. A single line of writing ran along the edge in the maker's hand. *The water is the door. Come down, and bring the one whose stone has died.* Ash reached out and took the wrapped stone. His fingers shook. "Mine went dark two winters ago," he said. His voice dropped. "He knew. He knew I'd come." For the first time he did not look at Azria like a bargain. He looked afraid. Azria closed the map in her fist. The maker had not fled from her. He had drawn her here, step by step, and Ash with her. She looked at the black water. It gave nothing back. "He's waiting under this," she said. "And he wants us both." She stood. The chest was open, its secret spent. The only way left ran down through the dark water, toward a man who had planned her arrival long before she knew his name.
