Chapter 1

Bailey Baz had led three lost children out of the swamp that week, but he still could not answer the one question that gnawed at him: why he never grew old. He was small, barefoot, and wrapped in a coat that swallowed his hands. He looked like a boy of eight. He had looked like a boy of eight for a hundred years. He knelt in the mud beside the old root den. Its walls twisted up around a hollow mouth, and moss clung to the cracks. Someone had carved marks into the oldest root long ago. Bailey traced them with a finger. Curved lines, dots, a shape like a bent hook. He had walked past these marks for decades. Tonight he needed to read them. A month ago a dying traveler had gripped his wrist. "The swamp remembers what you are," the man had whispered. "It's written in the old carvings." Then the man died. Bailey had come back to the den every night since. The marks stayed silent. No one alive spoke the old tongue. The elders who once read it were long dead, and Bailey knew of no one who remembered. So he stopped waiting for a teacher. He pressed both palms flat against the carved root. The bark was cold and slick. He shut his eyes and thought of the traveler's words. The swamp remembers. Heat rose under his hands. Not from the wood. From him. His palms glowed faint blue, and the light spread into the grooves of the carvings. The marks drank it up. One by one they brightened, curve and dot and hook. And he understood them. Not by learning. By remembering. The shapes settled into meaning like faces he had always known. His breath caught. He read the first line aloud, and the sounds came off his tongue smooth and certain, a language he had never studied. "The vine-bound warden," he read. "The keeper of the drowned. Made to walk the young to safe ground until his debt is paid." His hands shook. The words named him. He was not a boy at all. He was something the swamp had made and set to a task. The carving named a maker too, a man bound by these same vines two thousand years past. A prisoner. Bailey did not know the name, but the marks said the prisoner still lived, deep where the vines grew thickest. The glow faded. The root went dark. Bailey pulled his hands back and stared at them. He could read the old tongue now. It lived inside him, like everything else he could not explain. One truth stood clear. The one who could tell him what he was still breathed somewhere in this swamp, tangled in living vines. Bailey rose. His debt, whatever it was, began at that prisoner's roots. He stepped past the hollow den and turned toward the deep water, where the oldest vines waited.
