Chapter 4

Balloony bounced past the trophy case, his mind buzzing with survival strategies. A wooden rack appeared ahead, displaying thick rubber patches in different sizes. He stopped and examined them closely. These could seal small punctures before they became fatal pops. He picked up a patch with his mouth and set it down, testing how sticky the backing felt. The adhesive grabbed onto the ground, firm and secure. If he got scraped during a rescue, these patches could save his life. He made a mental note of where this rack stood—he'd need to remember it when the festival chaos started each day. Past the rack, the festival path changed beneath his paws. Spongy mushroom caps covered the ground in thick clusters, their soft surfaces cushioning each bounce. Balloony tested them carefully, pressing down with one paw. They gave way gently, absorbing impact without any sharp edges hidden underneath. Between the caps, he spotted nettle plants growing along the path's edge, their jagged leaves and fuzzy stems standing out against the softer mushrooms. He stopped and studied them from a safe distance. Those pointy edges could scratch his rubber skin if he wasn't careful. "WOOF WOOF!" he barked, practicing his warning call. Learning to spot these natural dangers before getting too close was just as important as dodging festival pins. A weathered bandstand rose up ahead, its wooden frame covered in peeling paint and tangled vines. Balloony bounced toward it and circled the structure slowly. This must be where the festival began, back before the streets became filled with daily sharp object chaos. He climbed onto the soft mushroom caps near its base and looked out at the festival zone. The patches taught him about healing. The nettles taught him about natural dangers. The bandstand reminded him why this place mattered—generations of festivals, generations of balloons needing rescue. He was learning to survive here, one danger at a time, building the skills he'd need to save others without popping himself.
